Tempo Practice
Tempo Practice
Overview:
Tempo Practice is a rhythm-focused practice tool for those who wish to hone their timing precision. By merging traditional practice with some gamified elements, it provides both fun and focused rhythm training.
Functionality and Features:
- Beat Alignment Feedback: Tempo Practice visually indicates if you're ahead or behind the metronome's click. When you're in sync with the beat, the screen stays green. If you go outside your set margin of error, it turns red, signifying a timing misstep.
- Margin of Error Customization: Adjust your desired margin of error using the slider or manually drag to set a specific zone on the timeline. This allows you to practice within varying degrees of tightness or even to work on playing slightly behind the beat.

Precision Feedback:
One of the standout attributes of Tempo Practice is its ultra-high precision. It processes MIDI controller data down to the sample, offering an unparalleled level of timing accuracy. Every DAW setup will naturally introduce some latency, especially when using higher buffer sizes. While high-performance computers can often manage with lower buffer sizes, thereby having minimal latency around 2.5 ms, machines that require higher buffer sizes, often older ones, can exhibit latencies as high as 12-15 ms. This is where Tempo Practice shines: you can increase your buffer size to alleviate processing strain on your computer, and then use the plugin to compensate for the added latency, ensuring accurate practice sessions. - MIDI Integration: Tempo Practice operates as a Max for Live MIDI device. To function, it requires MIDI data input, typically from a MIDI controller. It's worth noting that it's a visualization tool and doesn’t produce sound.
- Interface: A minimalist interface presents a clear timeline with time divisions, making it intuitive to navigate and understand your progress.
Precision over everything:
Tempo Practice's BPM is set to follow Ableton's BPM. However, due to it's high-precision design which works on a sample-based level, not all BPMs are compatible. This limitation arises because not all BPMs can divide each sample rate into a whole number. This division issue might cause a small BPM shift over time. Tempo Practice indicates which BPMs are compatible. It's a precision trade-off: while some BPMs are excluded to ensure maximum accuracy, it results in an unmatched timing precision during practice.
Who It's For:
Finger drummers, musicians with MIDI controllers, or anyone keen to refine their rhythm can benefit from Tempo Practice.
Note: We're aware of the BPM constraints and are actively researching ways to provide even more flexibility without compromising precision.
